St. Therese, Co-Missionary
In a poem to Our Lady of Victories, St. Therese wrote:
“In my deep solitude, Mary . . . I want to win hearts. / Through your Apostle [Father Roulland, a missionary to China], I shall convert sinners / As far as the ends of the earth.”
In much of Therese’s writings she mentions her vocation in Carmel as being that of praying for priests. She especially attached herself to the missionary priests and their apostolate which she says could lead to martyrdom. She believed that mission work not only depends on missionaries in the field but also on the love, prayer, suffering, and sacrifices that contemplatives like herself spend their lives in doing for them.
As a Basilian co-missionary, you, like Therese, share in the work of our priests by your love, prayer, suffering and sacrifices. We thank you, and may St. Therese, our patroness, bless you.
