Father John Boscoe
Named As Mission Director

Father John Boscoe
has been assigned the responsibility of Mission Director for the Basilian Fathers Missions by Very Reverend Kenneth Decker, Superior General of the world wide Basilian Fathers.

Rev. John Boscoe, C.S.B.
Rev. John Boscoe, C.S.B.

Father Boscoe reminds us of our missionary character, “By virtue of the fact that we are all members of God’s family, we are all missionaries. The Father has the same work for all his sons and daughters. That work is not just the responsibility of those who leave home and travel to foreign lands but the task of the entire Church. The accomplishments, great or small, of each missionary are only possible because of the prayers and donations of his sisters and brothers.”

Father John is uniquely fit for his new position both by his great love and devotion to the missions and by his administrative background. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he took first vows as a Basilian in 1962. After gaining a degree in history and teaching for two years in Basilian schools, he began his theology at St. Basil’s seminary in Toronto. He was awarded his Masters of Divinity in 1971 and completed his theology studies in Mexico City while serving as a deacon at San Juan Crisostomo Parish. He was ordained to the priesthood in Houston in 1972.

Father John spent the rest of the 1970s as a missionary in Mexico, serving as an associate pastor in Mexico City and Amusgos, Oaxaca. He also worked as the director of the Centro Cultural, a special apostolate giving room and board to poor University and Polytechnical students in Mexico, D.F.

During the 1980's, Father Boscoe returned to Texas and served in several parishes with a large Spanish speaking population in Houston, Angleton, Rosenberg and Sugar Land. He gained administrative experience both as an assistant and as pastor during these years. From the early 1990s, he has served as a pastor in several of the Basilian missions in Puebla, Mexico. When Father John went to Colombia to attend the ordination of Juan Carlos (see article on page 3), he stayed about three weeks to learn more about the mission area there and to assist the missionaries when necessary.
