Our Mission in Mexico
In 1961, after nearly thirty years of working among Mexican migrant workers south and west of Houston, TX, the Basilian Fathers took the next logical step – we went to Mexico. Answering the call of Pope John XXIII, who encouraged religious communities to send people to Latin America, the Basilian Fathers Missions began a process of taking over at poor parishes, building them up, and giving them over to local dioceses for continued ministry.
San Lorenzo is comprised of the main church of San Lorenzo and its six outlying chapels where seven Basilian priests and around five hundred lay associates minister pastorally and sacramentally to the community. Within its scope of outreach, our apostolate in Mexico serves approximately twenty thousand parishioners and accompanies several lay ecclesial movements. Among those movements of which we are a part, there is the Christian Family Movement, Marriage Encounter, Retrouvaille, and Emmaus. Through these programs we seek to assist community members in their formation as human persons and members of society, as well as in their sacramental and spiritual formation.
In Mexico, our aspiration has been to teach in the goodness and love of the Lord; inviting spiritual growth through pastoral care. For over half a century we have labored to nurture faith and solidarity in the people we serve.
The parishioners of San Lorenzo are now our biggest focus, and we need your help in supporting this community.
Any donation you can make, large or small, goes a long way in helping provide what is essential for our charitable ministry.
